According to Chevrolet, those measurements are certified by the Society of Automotive Engineers. Depending on the configuration of your vehicle trim, the 2.7-liter L3B provides maximum towing capacities of between 8,900 and 9,500 pounds. 

Silverados with the I-4 L3B engine offer options for fuel efficiency. In two-wheel drive, the EPA estimates the Silverado gets 19 mpg in city driving and 22 mpg on the highway. Four-wheel-drive models get an EPA-estimated 18 mpg city and 21 mpg highway.

Naturally Aspirated 5.3-Liter EcoTec3 V-8 L84 Engine

The next engine in the Silverado lineup is the naturally aspirated 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V-8 L84. It comes with variable valve timing and direct fuel injection and provides direct high-pressure fuel injection and dynamic fuel management to ensure maximum efficiency. The engine is built with overhead valve construction and has two valves per cylinder.

The V-8 L84 engine generates 355 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 383 lb-ft of torque at 4,100 rpm. When attaching a trailer, the EcoTec3 V-8 L84 engine can pull loads ranging from 9,200 pounds to 11,300 pounds. The exact trailer rating will depend on whether you have a regular, double, or crew cab and front-wheel or all-wheel drive. Payload weights range from 1,900 pounds to 2,180 pounds. 

Silverados with the 5.3-liter V-8 offer a comprehensive range of mileage options. According to the EPA, the Silverado gets 17 mpg in city driving and 21 mpg on the highway in two-wheel drive. Four-wheel-drive models get an EPA-estimated 16 mpg city and 20 mpg highway.

Naturally Aspirated 6.2-Liter V-8 L87 Engine 

Naturally aspirated engines tend to perform more efficiently, so the Silverado offers a second choice in this category: the 6.2-liter V-8 L87 gas engine. This option provides eight cylinders with direct fuel injection and dynamic fuel management to get the most you need from your truck. The engine puts out 420 horsepower at 5,600 rpm, producing 460 lb-ft of torque at 4,100 rpm. Chevrolet constructed this engine as an overhead valve option with two valves per cylinder and variable valve timing.

Trailering is available only in the crew cab configuration and ranges between 9,200 pounds and 13,300 pounds, minus the weight of your load. Base payloads for this engine range from about 1,500 pounds to 1,980 pounds, depending on configuration.

The 6.2-liter V-8 L87 Silverado engine is only available in four-wheel drive, producing an EPA-estimated 16 mpg in city driving and 20 mpg on the highway. The Trail Boss trim with this engine gets 14 mpg in city driving and 18 mpg in highway driving.

3.0-Liter Turbo-Diesel I-6 LZ0 Duramax Engine 

A second turbocharged engine option in the Silverado 1500 lineup is the 3.0-liter I-6 LZ0 Duramax engine. It features dual-overhead camshafts with four valves per cylinder and generates 305 horsepower at 3,750 rpm with a maximum torque of 495 lb-ft at 1,500 rpm. The LZ0 uses high-pressure, common-rail direct injection to deliver fuel using an electronic throttle valve.

Towing capacities are higher for the lineup, ranging between 9,000 pounds and 13,300 pounds for the heaviest towing jobs. Remember to calculate the weight of your payload when estimating trailering safety. Base payloads range from about 1,800 pounds to 1,920 pounds.

Silverados with the I-6 LZ0 engine provide three levels of fuel efficiency. In two-wheel drive, the EPA estimates the Silverado gets 24 mpg in city driving and 29 mpg on the highway. Four-wheel-drive models get an estimated 22 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.
