Chevrolet Super Cruise‹

In recent years, the automotive industry has witnessed significant advancements in autonomous driving technology. One standout innovation is Super Cruise by GM, which merges advanced sensors, mapping data, and artificial intelligence to enable semi-autonomous driving. In this article, our team at Victorville Chevrolet explores how this system was developed, how it operates, and what it means for the future of driving.

What Is Super Cruise?

Super Cruise is GM's hands-free driver-assistance technology that enhances highway driving by making it safer and less stressful. Unlike the usual cruise control, it lets you relax your grip on the steering wheel. The system handles the steering, acceleration, and braking on designated highways.

This technology marks a significant leap in automotive innovation and semi-autonomous driving. Since its debut in 2017 and first appearance on the Cadillac CT6, it has expanded to more than 20 models, including the following:

  • GM's Cadillac
  • Chevrolet
  • Buick
  • GMC brands

How Does Chevy Super Cruise Work?

Super Cruise integrates several technologies to create a hands-free driving experience.

Precision Mapping

The light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology creates extremely detailed 3D maps of compatible roadways. These maps capture precise lane lines, road curvature, and elevation changes. Super Cruise updates the map data via over-the-air updates to keep the system current with any changes to the road network.

Sensor Fusion

The system uses cameras, radar, and LiDAR sensors to monitor the vehicle's surroundings. This integration allows Super Cruise to detect lane markings and monitor nearby vehicles accurately. The cameras track lane markings and radar monitors nearby cars. The LiDAR provides high-definition maps of approved roads. This helps the system to operate only when it has detailed, reliable information about the roadway layout.

GPS Integration

The GPS in Super Cruise is not just standard navigation. It comes with real-time corrections and is paired with LiDAR-mapped roads. The system continuously checks its position against the mapped highway network. Super Cruise will alert you to take back control if the GPS signal is lost or if your vehicle leaves a mapped road.

Unified Lateral Controller

This is Super Cruise's advanced software system, which is responsible for all steering-related functions. It manages precise lane centering and responds to driver requests such as canceling a maneuver mid-action. It also continuously processes a wide range of real-time data, such as road curvature from the LiDAR maps.

How To Use Super Cruise

You can activate Super Cruise by following a simple process.

Use Adaptive Cruise Control

To activate adaptive cruise control (ACC), you must press a button on your steering wheel while taking your feet off the pedals. This will illuminate an ACC icon on your instrument cluster, which will either be white or green with the set speed.

Drive on a Compatible Road

Super Cruise is only compatible with roads that have clear lane markings and GPS availability. In such conditions, it'll display a white icon.

Center Your Vehicle in the Lane

You may have to center your vehicle in the lane before the Super Cruise icon appears or changes from blue to white on some models.

Engage Super Cruise

Press the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel. It's usually marked with a steering wheel icon. The steering wheel light bar and the Super Cruise symbol will turn green. This indicates that the system is actively steering and allows you to safely remove your hands from the steering wheel.

Chevy Hands-Free Driving

If the light bar is green, you can drive hands-free while the system controls steering, braking, and acceleration. It uses precision LiDAR mapping along with cameras, sensors, and GPS to keep the vehicle centered in the lane and maintain a safe following distance.

Taking Control

You can place your hands on the wheel to take over steering at any time. The light bar will pulse blue to indicate manual control. You can resume using the system by centering the vehicle in the lane and waiting for the light bar to turn green again.

Disengaging Super Cruise

You can turn off this system by pressing the Super Cruise button again. Just press the brake pedal or use the ACC off/cancel button. The system may also request that you take back control for safety reasons.

This system requires an active subscription and works best in good weather conditions with clear lane markings. Don't use it in adverse circumstances such as heavy rain or construction zones.
